A person has long been hunting animals, not assuming that he himself can sometimes become prey. Such animals are very rare, but eyewitness accounts of them cause real horror.
Lions of Nyombe. Stories of lions attacking humans are not so rare. The most famous such case occurred in 1932 in Tanzania, near the city of Nyombe. A whole flock of man-eating lions appeared there. As a result, many people became their victims. Legends say that this dangerous pride was previously controlled by a shaman of one of the local tribes. As soon as he was removed from his place, he began to take revenge on his fellow tribesmen. As a result of the attack, the unfortunate Africans were so intimidated by the predators that they were afraid to even talk about it.
People thought that mere mention of the cannibals would immediately summon them. Frightened residents asked the head of the tribe to return the former shaman back, but he was relentless. And the lions continued their hunt for people. As a result, more than 1,500 people were killed. The famous hunter George Rushby volunteered to solve the problem. He managed to kill 15 lions, and the rest after that left these lands. This ended a series of murders. True, the locals believed that everything happened thanks to the very shaman, who nevertheless returned his former place.
Two-toed Tom. Under this name, a huge American crocodile went down in history. He literally terrorized the swamps of Florida and Alabama in the twenties of the last century. Tom became a local legend. As a result, the myths about him were confused with the truth. It is already impossible to understand exactly what was in fact and what was invented later. We can say for sure that the alligator had only two claws on the left paw. As a result, he left characteristic marks in the mud. This was the reason to call him "Two-Fingered Tom".
The body length of the killer crocodile was 4.5 meters. The locals believed that it was not an ordinary alligator, but a demon sent from hell. There was no other way to explain the reason for such terror. Tom's bad reputation is based on his constant attacks on animals. Mules and cows suffered from it. And most importantly, he fell in love with attacking people. Most often, women who wash clothes in the river suffered from the paws and teeth of a predator. The farmers announced a hunt for the alligator, but the bullets did not harm him. So the attempts to kill Tom failed. Locals even decided to get rid of the predator with dynamite. The most reckless hunter has been tracking a crocodile for twenty years. In the end, it seemed to him, the farmer found the very pond where the crocodile was hiding. As many as 15 buckets of explosives were dropped there. This should have finally solved the problem.
A terrible explosion destroyed all life in the pond. Only Tom survived. Seconds later, the farmer and his son heard splashes of water and terrible screams. They rushed to the sound. A terrible picture appeared to their eyes - the farmer's daughter was half eaten by a predator, and he himself managed to show his glowing eyes before diving into the water. It is not known if this story actually happened, but the fact that Tom existed is a fact. He has indeed terrorized the swamps of the two states over the years. Local residents said that they saw a huge alligator on the shores of the lakes, heard its powerful roar. The fact that it really was Two-Toed Tom is indicated by its characteristic footprints in the sand and mud. It is said that even in the eighties, people found footprints of an alligator with two claws in the swamps where the famous killer lived in the twenties. And all attempts to catch him and kill him have never been successful.
Kesagake. People are sometimes afraid of large animals, but they do not suspect that the threat can come from even small creatures. So, in Japan, the most terrible representative of the animal world is not some huge predator, but an insect. This is a huge Japanese hornet. About 40 people die from his bites in the country every year. But from the large and strong predators, the brown bear stands out. Many bloody stories are also associated with him. The most famous of them is the bear's attacks on people in 1915. It happened in the village of Sankebetsu in Hokkaido. Then it was a settlement created by pioneers.
Among the vast empty territories, a village was lost, in which only a few people lived. The owners of these lands were brown bears. A huge male, nicknamed by the inhabitants of Kesagake, stood out among them. He constantly came to the village to eat the corn grown by the locals. People didn't like this and one day two hunters shot a bear. The wounded animal fled to the mountains. The residents decided that after that the brown bears would stop visiting the village and ravaging the nearby fields. However, people were cruelly mistaken.
On December 9, 1915, the Kesagake bear visited the village again. This time, he immediately broke into the Ota family's home. At that time there was only a woman with a small child. A huge, angry animal killed him and chased after his mother. She tried to somehow fight off the predator. She threw at him burning logs from the hearth, but this did not stop the bear - he dragged the unfortunate woman into the forest. When the inhabitants came to the house, they saw that all the walls and floor were covered with blood. Thirty people set out in pursuit of the killer bear. They were determined to kill the beast and find the remains of their fellow tribe. However, upon finding the bear, the hunters were never able to kill it. The bear was injured again and fled again.
A little later, the bear returned to the house he had ruined. Then the hunters set off in pursuit of him. It turned out that it was a cunning maneuver of the beast. After all, now other houses are left unprotected. The bear broke into the Mioke family's home and attacked the people who were there. Some managed to escape, but two children and a pregnant woman became victims of the predator. In two days, the bloodthirsty bear killed six people. The villagers were so frightened that some of the men even avoided guarding the perimeter. Everyone hid in their homes.
A famous bear hunter became aware of this incident. He recognized in Kesagak the most famous cannibal who had attacked people before. At first, the hunter refused to hunt the monster, but later he was persuaded. Together with the local residents, he set out to capture the beast and on December 14, Kesagake was killed. It turned out that the height of the bear was 3 meters, and its weight was about 380 kilograms. The remains of people were found in the stomach of the beast, but even after his death, Kesagake took revenge on the people. Some of the villagers, who then survived after meeting the beast, later died of their wounds. People left the cursed village of Sankbetsu, which had become abandoned.
Shark from New Jersey. In 1916, little was known about sharks. No one expected danger from them, because some scientists seriously argued that these predators are safe for humans. That story took place off the coast of New Jersey. Charles Vancent was swimming in shallow water when suddenly a shark attacked him. Several people, including the man's family, witnessed this incident. People rushed to help Vincent, among others there was a special rescuer. However, the shark turned out to be very persistent, it pursued the victim and his rescuer almost to the very shore. It turned out that the predator's teeth damaged Charles' femoral artery, his leg was practically severed. The victim bled to death before medical assistance arrived.
However, the shark continued its attacks on humans. Five days later, local resident Charles Bruder swam right there, climbing far from the coast. Eyewitnesses say they saw what looked like an overturned red canoe. But it was a huge bloody stain. The shark bit off both legs of the swimmer. Charles managed to be pulled ashore, but by that time he had already died of blood loss.
Over the next few days, in coastal waters near New Jersey, eyewitnesses observed sharks. However, scientists stated that they were not to blame for these attacks, but some killer whales. Even sea turtles have been named as possible culprits. The next shark attack took place not in the sea, but in a small bay near the town of Matavan. As in previous cases, locals again saw a shark in the water, but did not pay attention to it. On July 12, an eleven-year-old boy who was swimming in the sea became another victim of a man-eating predator. Several people rushed into the water to help the unfortunate man. Stanley Fisher was among them. He dived into the ocean, becoming another shark victim. Soon Fischer died of his wounds. Half an hour after these tragic events, the shark killed another little boy. This was her last human sacrifice.
On July 14, near the Matavan Bay, in the Raritan Bay, fishermen caught a great white shark. The remains of a man were found in her stomach. Since then, white sharks have gained a reputation as cannibals. All the newspapers in America published about those terrible events. A series of shark attacks on humans has been called the most violent in the history of the country. Those incidents later inspired writer Peter Benchley to create the famous novel Jaws. Later, Steven Spielberg shot the famous scary film based on his motive.
Bear from Mysore. Many dangerous animals can be found in the jungles of India. But the sloth bear is considered the most terrible of all here. These predators attack people every year. At the same time, the animals practically do not eat their victims after being killed. In fact, this type of bear rarely eats meat at all. Their main food is fruits, honey and termites. But one of the representatives of this species received special fame, because he began to hunt people. According to the legends of the Hindus, this bear began to avenge the death of its cubs. But experts put forward a simpler version. They believe that the bear was just once wounded by people, so he began to behave aggressively towards them.
In total, more than 30 residents of the state of Mysore suffered from the paws of the killer bear. The predator adhered to his usual tactics - he tore the victim's face with claws and fangs. Even those who survived the encounter with the bear were permanently disfigured. This series of attacks resulted in 12 casualties. At the same time, the bear ate three people at all, which is rather unusual for this species. But over time, the terrible predator was killed by Kenneth Anderson, the famous bear hunter. Three previous rounds of the murderer by the authorities had been unsuccessful.
Zhevodansky beast. This man-eating beast is not only one of the most famous, it is also the most mysterious of all. This monster literally terrorized the province of Gevaudan in France from 1764 to 1767. It was said that this beast was just a huge wolf. However, it was not possible to truly determine the species of this animal. Few eyewitnesses described the monster to be much larger than a normal wolf. It was distinguished by a reddish shade of wool and a disgusting smell. The fangs of the beast were much larger than those of an ordinary wolf.
The first victim of the cannibal was a little girl in 1764. After that, the beast began to behave strangely. Most likely, he temporarily switched to wild and domestic animals. However, soon the beast began to attack people again. In total, 210 people became its victims. 112 of them died, and the rest were permanently crippled. The attacks occurred so often and were so brutal that the locals began to consider the monster a demon sent by God to earth as punishment for human sins. It was rumored that the Gevodan Beast was actually a werewolf.
Today, a popular point of view is that this animal was just a large wolf. His descriptions generally correspond to the features of the European wolves that lived in France in those years and were well studied. It is believed that the predator who intimidated Gevodan could in fact be a hyena that escaped from the menagerie. It is considered that these animals are cowardly, but in fact they are very strong predators. In Africa and Asia, it is not uncommon for hyenas to attack people. Like the Gevodan beast, these animals have large fangs and an unpleasant odor. And hyenas look bigger and stronger than ordinary wolves. According to the legends of that time, in 1767 a monster from Gevodan was killed by the hunter Jean Chastel. For this he used silver bullets.
Devilish Kenyan Lions. In 1898, England began building a railway bridge across the Kenyan Tsavo River. Apparently, nature did not like it. After all, the next nine months became a real nightmare for workers and builders. They became the target of attacks for two killer lions. Moreover, the predators were unusually large in size, they were more than three meters long. Like other local lions, these also lacked a mane. At first, the lions began to attack at night and carry people into the thicket to eat there. But soon the cannibals finally grew bolder - they began to eat their victims right next to their tents.
These two lions were so insidious, ferocious and huge that the locals immediately considered them demons. Supposedly they decided to drive out the British invaders from here. Construction of the bridge stalled as workers fled by the hundreds from the camp. As a result, the work finally stopped, no one wanted to become another victim of the devil's lions.
John Henry Patterson was chiefly interested in solving this problem. After all, it was he who was responsible for the construction of the bridge. In December 1898, he killed the first lion, and a couple of weeks later he shot the second. At that time, 140 people became victims of cannibals. Patterson even found a den where the animals were hiding. Their cave was located on the banks of the Tsavo River. The remains of many victims of predators, parts of clothing and shoes were found there. This cave has survived to this day. The remains are no longer there, although locals claim that human bones can still be found in the old den. The remains of two famous killer tigers are on display in the Chicago Museum today. Currently, the Kenyan authorities have announced their intention to build an entire museum dedicated to those predators and their prey.
Panarian leopard. Although the leopard is the smallest representative of predatory big cats, this fact does not make the animal less dangerous. After all, it is the leopard that is one of the most ancient predators. Scientists found marks from his bites on the fossilized bones of fossil people. These animals hunted us three million years ago. Although humans are prey for the leopard, few of these animals prefer to feed on human flesh.
The most cruel, and therefore the most famous, was the Panarian man-eating leopard. He lived in India, in the Kumaon district at the very beginning of the last century. The inhabitants of the province of Panar suffered the most from the attacks of the dangerous beast. There, the leopard killed over 500 people. It is believed that the cause of such aggression was the wound inflicted on the animal by one of the hunters. After that, the leopard could no longer, as before, hunt wild animals. So he chose for himself, in order to survive, new victims - people. In 1910, that leopard was shot by the famous hunter Jim Corbett.
Shampavat tigress. This beast began to terrorize the area of Nepal near the Himalayas in the late 19th century. As a result, the tigress became one of the most cruel man-eating animals in history. Dozens of people disappeared in the jungle. There were both women and children among them. The attacks became so frequent and violent that the locals traditionally considered the animal a demon, and its appearance as a punishment of the gods. It turned out that the Bengal tigress was the culprit in the series of attacks on people. Once a hunter wounded her, and a bullet broke two of her fangs. Since then, she could no longer hunt wild animals, but the tigress turned out to be to her liking to attack people and eat them.
In a short time, the tigress killed over 200 people. Hunters were sent to the jungle to catch her. However, the predator turned out to be very cunning and skillfully hid from people. To finally solve this problem, the Nepalese authorities called for help from the army. After the case of the capture of the Zhivodansky beast, this story became the second, when the participation of the army was required to kill a dangerous animal. But even the soldiers were unable to catch the ogre. True, the tigress nevertheless left the inhabited territory. Fleeing from the hunters, she crossed the border with India and settled in the Shampavat region. There she continued to hunt people. With each killing, the animal became more fearless and cruel. The beast began to attack people even during the day. Whole villages were emptied - people were afraid to even leave their homes for work.
The end of the chain of murders was put by the same hunter Jim Corbett. In 1911, he managed to track down and kill the bloodthirsty tigress. The hunter followed the bloody trail left by the last victim of the predator, a little girl. The locals were so happy to get rid of the cannibal that they immediately proclaimed the Englishman a saint. At that time, 436 people were listed as victims of the Shampavat tigress. The animal was able to kill more people than the most brutal serial killer. But there were also cases that were simply not reported officially.
Gustav. All of the aforementioned cannibalistic predators have long been dead, and their atrocities are only part of the story. But this monster is still alive. A terrible man-eating predator lives in the African country of Burundi. This Nile crocodile reaches six meters in length and weighs a ton. According to the authorities, as well as the French researcher Patrice Fayet, who has been looking for this monster for several years, the animal has already killed more than 300 people. The crocodile became legendary in the local area, he was nicknamed Gustav.
Locals say that Gustav doesn't kill people for food. Its main goal is entertainment. After all, a crocodile can kill several people at a time, and then disappear for months. As a result, no one can predict when the cannibal will return and attack the person again. It is believed that the crocodile has a monstrous appetite. According to rumors, he once killed and ate a whole hippopotamus.
Crocodile skin is covered with numerous scars from knives, pikes and even firearms. There is a dark spot on Gustav's forehead. This is a trail from a bullet wound that could stop the atrocities of the animal. Many hunters and even soldiers are involved in the search and capture of him. However, all efforts have so far been unsuccessful. Faye himself tried to catch the crocodile. For this, he made an underwater trap. But according to the Frenchman, Gustav was just floating around, as if looking mockingly at his possible kidnappers.
They say that the crocodile is over 60 years old. He's probably already very experienced and smart enough to fall for tricks. If not stopped, Gustav could break the record among man-eating animals. Faye himself hopes to catch the crocodile and keep him alive. After all, he can become a breeding producer, improving the population of the Nile crocodile. An aviary has already been erected in Burundi National Park for the most famous man-eating predator of our time.
